I thought this article was very interesting. It’s about the risks, not only to individuals, but to companies as well, of having so much information available online. These days there’s a sort of information over-share with constant status updates, location check-ins, mobile picture uploads, etc. It has become very common for companies to rely on social media sites to aid companies in background checks and to keep an eye on competitors. This summer, I was involved with the interview process of some brand ambassadors at the company I was working for and once we had narrowed down the candidates based on their resumes, I was asked to see what I could find about them online. The article mentions a survey which estimated that in the last year more than 150 companies monitored social media sites to gather information. Kroll Senior Managing Director Rich Plansky comments, “Social media has become a much more efficient way of getting information that could only be gotten in the past by things like surveillance.” Thoughts?
